Pre-Info for participants

24th of June – 14th of July 2011

Like to get your hands dirty??

The theme of our IPP is Dugnad, which is a Norwegian word meaning “Collective Volunteer Actions”!Dugnad is a common way Norwegians GIVE A HAND TO SOCIETY.IPPers, you will get a chance to get hands-on and apply some of your practical and communication skills while working on the renovation of a cabin owned by DNT in the scenic mountains of Norway. There will be the need to do some carpentry, painting and other DIY activities and there might be a need to mark the paths leading up to the hut.

A little bit about the host…

…DNT is the largest outdoor activity organization in Norway. For some 140 years, DNT have been working to promote trekking and to improve conditions for all who enjoy the country’s broad range of outdoor attractions. The organization promotes active, versatile and environmentally friendly outdoor activities while preserving the cultural landscape. They own and maintain cabins all around the Norwegian vast landscape for trekkers to stay at overnight or for a quick snack and rest.

And finally, how can we make a difference in our communities?

The theoretical part of the project will involve learning about and understanding the variety of ways people GIVE A HAND TO SOCIETY and do their “Dugnad” around the globe. During our time in the mountains we want to create a booklet or short video that captures the theme and can be used when participants carry out “Dugnad” in their own communities. We are also planning on publishing a book and a blog after the project, presenting the outcome of the project.

The educational part

The most important part of an IPP is the peace educational outcome for each of us participating in the project. Through out our project will we have educational activities related to our theme, „Dugnad“ either planed by you or by the us in the staff.

How and in which form collective volunteer actions are in the different countries are really interesting to explore. And we are really excited to dig into this theme with you!

So how is this going to be done in our project?

First of all, we are so stoked that we have been given funding for publishing a book about the educational outcome of our project. The book will be about „Collective volunteer actions in a Norwegian and international perspectives“. The content of the book will be made by us during the project. It will be published in both English and Norwegian and all participants will of course get some free copies of the book .

What do need you to do before the project?

Plan a delegation actitity?
What is that?
The delegation activity is an activity where the participants from the same country will make an activity presenting how Collective volunteer actions work is your communities. The activities can be 1-2 hours and the rest of the IPP-group should through your activity get a better understaning of theme in your country.

You will have some time to plan the activity when you are in the camp, but what’s most important is to try to gather as much information about the theme in your country as possible before you come here.

Pictures of collective volunteer actions
For us to make our book really nice we need pictures from you! We want you to find some examples of collective volunteer actions in your local community and take pictures of it! It’s really important that you’ve taken the pictures, and that you ask the people in the picture if you can use it in a book in Norway.

We really need you to do this!!

The practical work

Our partner organization Stavanger Turistforening has given us a list of tasks they want us to do. For every little we do, they appreciate. Here are some of the tasks:

Both the floor in the living room and in the basement needs to be painted. The doors of the toilets have some inscriptions on them, so we need to cover them and paint them white. These are perfect indoor tasks when it is raining outside.

Next to the cabin it is a small stream where a beaver is living. The beaver has cut down some trees that now are just laying around. So we need to pick them up, collect them and the nearby farmer will come and use them as firewood.

André is by profession a form builder so he is going to change four of the windows. Here he is checking out the windows.

Both of the cabins need to be painted on the outside, so bring cloths that you can paint in.

There are a number of fire pits around the cabins that needs to be removed, like André shows here.

On the main building there are some planks that need to be changed.

Behind that cabin it is a sloop that is used in the winter for sliding, however now it is starting to grow small trees there. We need to cut those down. On Sunday 3rd we will invite our partner organization for a Dugnad day and cutting down trees will be one of the major task for that day.
